Proposed Skatepark Location: In the Middle of Middlebury

November 20, 2022 Project updates

Following the Middlebury Skatepark Project’s initial meetings last spring, Middlebury College student Clark O’Bryan (an architecture major) stepped up to perform site analyses on several locations around town in order to narrow down suitable locations for the skatepark. Thanks to his work we’ve pin-pointed an amazing potential location in Recreation Park near the swimming pool and bike pump track (coming soon)! We’ve even received an initial “thumbs up” from the Parks and Recreation Department to use this area for the skatepark.

While the final location is not fully set in stone at this point, we are excited by the extreme potential of this spot. It’s in a highly visible, central location. It’s within walking- or riding-distance from schools and neighborhoods. It is near existing amenities such as restrooms. And of course, it’s right next door to other recreational activities and a playground. Really now, what better place for a skatepark than Rec Park!?

Two rectangular shapes have been drawn over the photo to show the future locations of a bike pump track and 7500 square foot concrete skatepark. The shapes are drawn to the right and below the swimming pool. Text at the bottom of the photo says, Photo by Caleb Kenna.

Building the skatepark at this site hinges on full approval from Addison Central School District, which owns the land, and the Selectboard. We’re feeling confident that this would be an awesome place for a skatepark, especially being so close to the new pump track, and we hope the rest of the community will agree!
